Nancy C. Welch
As a psychologist at Texas A&M University, I consider it a privilege to work with college students and the
concerns they bring to the counseling relationship. Instead of being a sign of weakness, the decision to seek
therapy is a quality of strength, indicating a level of self-awareness and a willingness to be instrumental in
how one's life unfolds. That first step of coming through our doors takes courage and commitment, and I
realize that the trust and personal investment necessary in therapy is not always an easy journey. The
demands of college life often leads to challenges and struggles, and the therapeutic process provides an
opportunity to experience a safe and respectful environment while addressing these important issues. Some of
my specific interests include relationship concerns, women's issues, trauma work, and group psychotherapy. In
addition to my clinical work, I find special joy and satisfaction being involved in the training and
supervision of future psychologists.
As a therapist, I hold a humanistic, relational-cultural perspective; that is, I focus on the context of one's
life instead of viewing the self in isolation. This context includes both the person's present situation as
well as the context in which one has experienced life. I believe that personal well-being, self-esteem, and
quality of life are strongly related to the ability to connect with others in a mutually authentic and
meaningful way.
On a personal note, probably due to my previous nomadic life and living in Central America for several years,
I have wanderlust and enjoy traveling and experiencing other cultures, especially if it involves a reef or a
beach. I also enjoy playing the harmonica (not very well I might add) and spending time with my family and our
usual assortment of adopted pets.
