Brian K. Williams

Psychologist III; Coordinator of African American Students Counseling Services and Programs; HelpLine Clinical Consultant

Personal Statement:
My primary areas of professional interest are multicultural issues in counseling, and helping others from a culturally sensitive perspective. I believe that most traditional theories of counseling and psychotherapy fail to consider cultural aspects that contribute to the distress and concerns of an individual. I don't feel that a true and complete understanding of a person can occur without taking cultural factors into consideration. I also like facilitating psychotherapy and psycho educational groups, and have come to appreciate the learning and growth that can take place in a group setting. I enjoy working with the college student population and meeting students on their own "turf", and therefore try to attend as many student sponsored activities and programs as possible. Personally, I enjoy working out, reading, listening to jazz, bowling, fishing, and tending to my small garden. I am now a "retired" athlete but still enjoy watching sports. I still use an old Commodore 64 computer, a fact that draws constant ribbing from peers, and my favorite pastime activity is metal detecting.
